APPLICATIONS OF FLANGED ELECTRIC HEATERS WITH ATEX-EX CERTIFICATION

The ATEX-Ex electric heaters, designed to meet the essential safety requirements for explosive environments, are used in

  • storage tanks, operating under pressure and in direct contact with the fluid to be heated;
  • in-line piping carrying process fluids, to increase operating temperatures.

Flanged electric heaters are typically used in heating systems for:

  • Fresh and treated water
  • Heating and anti-freeze protection for storage tanks
  • Synthetic oils, lubricants, minerals and fuels
  • Storage and steam boilers
  • Process gases and other gaseous fluids (Nitrogen, Methane, Natural gas, etc.) – Refineries
  • Forced air heating (UREA -UTE treatment plants)
  • Liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons

Flanged electric heaters with Atex-Ex certification are used in the following reference sectors:

TECHNICAL FEATURES OF FLANGED ELECTRIC HEATERS WITH ATEX-EX CERTIFICATION

REART’s Atex heating elements are designed to offer high performance and safety. Each unit is made with U-shaped heating elements, TIG welded to the main flange. This design ensures durability, even in the most extreme conditions.

Usually, the following reference design parameters are used for the sizing of the flanged electric heaters:

  • Flanges up to 24”(DN600), in compliance with ANSI B 16.5 specifications, made of carbon steel, stainless steel and nickel alloys.
  • Diameter of the heating elements forming the bundle: 10 and 15 mm;
  • Materials of the heating elements: carbon steel, stainless steel (304-321 316 L), or nobler alloys such as Incoloy 800 or 825, Titanium or Copper.
  • Protection rating of the electrical enclosures of the heaters: IP55, IP65, IP66;
  • Installed electrical power: up to 1.65MW per single heater.

Components

Exd flanged armoured electric heaters are essentially composed of:

  • Heater connection flange, defined and sized according to client specifications during the quotation phase, ensuring proper heater sizing for process requirements
  • Heating bundle, with dimensions and materials selected based on the process fluid
  • Cooling and heat exchange baffles, ensuring efficient heat transfer between the heating bundle and the fluid
  • Explosion-proof protection unit and electrical head
  • Thermal sensors for process and heater regulation and safety.

The design process for this type of heater considers not only client-specified functional data but also the dimensional (available space), physical, chemical, and thermodynamic properties of the fluid to be heated. This ensures an accurate selection of heater dimensions and construction materials. The flange size is determined based on the electrical constraints imposed by ATEX regulations.

Accessories

All flanged electric heaters with Atex certification are equipped with thermal sensors such as thermostats, thermocouples or resistance temperature detectors (PT100) to protect both the system and the heater in case of abnormal or unexpected conditions.

Atex flanged heaters can be equipped with the following accessories:

  1. 4-20mA temperature transmitters, SIL-compliant according to IEC 61508
  2. Process and heater control and safety sensors (thermostats, PT100 RTDs, thermocouples).
  3. Exd power and safety cable glands
  4. Electrical command panel and heater control in a safe and classified area
  5. Local command and control panel in classified area (Atex).
  6. Anti-condensation heating element (prevention against humidity)
